Messier 27, also called the Dumbbell Nebula, is a planetary nebula in the constellation Vulpecula. It lies about 1,360 light years away and has a diameter of around 2.5 light years. The nebula formed from the expelled shells of a dying Sun-like star, whose core now remains as a white dwarf. M27’s characteristic appearance — marked by glowing colours of ionised hydrogen (Hα) and oxygen (OIII) and its bipolar structure — gives it a fascinating and complex look.
