NGC 1579, also known as the Northern Trifid Nebula, is a compact emission and reflection nebula in the constellation Perseus, about 2,600 light years away. Embedded young stars illuminate and ionise the surrounding gas, while dark dust clouds structure the nebula and give it its characteristic rugged appearance. The region is part of an active star-forming area near the galactic plane.
