NGC 2170, in the constellation Orion and about 2,700 light years away, is a reflection nebula formed from the light of a young star cluster. Its characteristic blue glow results from the excitation of the interstellar matter. As a “star-forming region”, NGC 2170 emerged from a cloud of gas and dust that triggered the birth of new stars. Discovered by William Herschel on 16 October 1784.
