Messier 5 is an impressive globular cluster in the constellation Serpens, about 25,500 light years from Earth. With a diameter of about 165 light years and an estimated mass of more than half a million solar masses, it is one of the oldest and most massive globular clusters in our Milky Way. At its centre lies a dense gathering of hundreds of thousands of stars of various ages, including variable stars.
