IC 1396 is an impressive emission nebula in the constellation Cepheus, about 2,400 light years away. It glows intensely in the Hα, OIII and SII bands and shows a fascinating mix of glowing gas and dark dust clouds. Its most striking feature is the Elephant’s Trunk Nebula (IC 1396A), a pillar-like formation of dense gas and dust. This region is an active star-forming area where young stars are shaped by radiation pressure and gas movements.
