SH2-240 – Spaghetti Nebula

SH2-240 (the Spaghetti Nebula) is an impressive supernova remnant in the constellation Taurus, about 3,000 light years away. It formed around 40,000 years ago from the explosion of a massive star. The nebula spans 3 degrees of sky, which corresponds to about 150 light years.

Its characteristic delicate filaments, which earned it the nickname “Spaghetti Nebula”, consist mainly of ionised hydrogen (Hα) and doubly ionised oxygen (OIII). These emission lines give the nebula its delicate, structured appearance.
