IC 348 is an open star cluster in the constellation Perseus, about 1,250 light years from Earth. The cluster consists of young stars that formed around 2 million years ago from the same cloud of gas and dust. Although known primarily as an open cluster, IC 348 is also accompanied by a diffuse glow of interstellar matter that appears as a reflection nebula. This nebula reflects the light of the nearby stars, making it visible.
