M3, also known as Messier 3, is a globular cluster in the constellation Canes Venatici, about 34,000 light years from Earth. It was discovered in 1764 by Charles Messier and is one of the oldest globular clusters in our galaxy. M3 contains several hundred thousand stars, is densely packed and impresses with its spherical shape.
