NGC 225 – open star cluster in the constellation Cassiopeia
NGC 225 is an open star cluster in the constellation Cassiopeia, about 2,200 light years from Earth. It was probably discovered in 1783 by Caroline Herschel.
With an apparent magnitude of about +7.0 mag it is not visible to the naked eye, but easily observed with binoculars or a small telescope. The cluster shows a striking triangular shape — hence its nickname the “Sailboat Cluster”.
NGC 225 is relatively young: its age is estimated at about 100 million years. The exact number of members varies depending on how they are counted and the depth of observation, but it is a loosely bound cluster with several dozen visible stars.
