NGC 4236 is an extended barred spiral galaxy in the constellation Draco and belongs to the M81 galaxy group. It lies about 11.7 million light years from Earth and spans a length of around 77,000 light years.
Characteristic of NGC 4236 is its pronounced bar, which influences the structure of the spiral arms. It contains numerous star-forming regions, made visible by intense hydrogen emissions (H-II regions). There are also extended clouds of gas and dust that help shape its form. Its low luminosity and diffuse structures define its appearance.
