NGC 7497 is a spiral galaxy in the constellation Pegasus, around 60 million light years away. We see it almost edge-on, which makes its dust and disc structure clearly visible. In the image it looks as if the galaxy is surrounded by nebulosity — but these are actually dust clouds within our own Milky Way. These very faint “Integrated Flux Nebulae” reflect the light of many stars and lie only a few hundred light years from us. That makes the image especially intriguing: it shows a distant galaxy and nearby structures of our Milky Way at the same time.
