Abell 85, also known as CTB 1, is an impressive supernova remnant in the constellation Cassiopeia. With a diameter of 1920 arcseconds it spans a wide area of the sky. Interestingly, Abell 85 was originally misclassified as a planetary nebula in 1955; first doubts were raised as early as 1960, and in 1971 its true nature as a supernova remnant was confirmed.
Abell 85 (CTB 1) shows fascinating OIII filaments at the edge of its large shell. Its age is estimated at about 10,000 years, pointing to the explosion of a massive type-B or type-O star at a distance of roughly 10,000 light years. This remnant is an impressive example of evolving astronomy and the wonders of the universe.
