NGC 1333 is a reflection nebula in the constellation Perseus, about 1,000 light years from Earth. It lies in an active star-forming region where young, hot stars make the surrounding gas and dust glow. The characteristic blue colour comes from the scattering of starlight by the fine dust particles, while the complex filaments highlight the dynamic structure of the region. NGC 1333 is thus an ideal target for making the early phase of star formation visible.
