NGC5907

NGC 5907 is a spiral galaxy in the constellation Draco, about 40 million light years away. Because we view the galaxy almost exactly edge-on, it appears as a narrow, strongly flattened disc of light with a pronounced dark dust band along the galactic plane. Due to its characteristic shape it is often also called the Splinter Galaxy or Knife-Edge Galaxy.

In April 2026 the supernova SN2026kid also appeared in NGC 5907 — a type-II supernova, triggered by the collapse of a massive star at the end of its evolution. The supernova was discovered on 22 April 2026 by the Japanese astronomer Yasuo Sano.
