Messier 22

The globular cluster Messier 22 lies in the constellation Sagittarius at a distance of about 9,785 light years and is one of the brightest and nearest of its kind. With a diameter of around 100 light years it contains more than several hundred thousand stars, crowded in its dense centre within a few hundredths of a light year of one another.

M22 is particularly striking because it is already visible to the naked eye and reveals a multitude of individual stars in larger telescopes — a fascinating sight that impressively shows the spherical structure and the enormous stellar density of this ancient galactic halo object.
